Thugs cheating people who went to withdraw money from ATM, no help from banks

New Delhi: Have you ever faced a situation when you insert a debit card in an ATM where security personnel are not deployed and your card gets stuck in the machine? If your answer is yes then you are not alone. Thugs on two wheelers are roaming around such ATMs. Where security personnel are not deployed so that they can cheat debit card users. They are duping such users of their hard earned money by cloning or swapping their cards. By the time you come to know about the fraud with you, you have been cheated of thousands to lakhs of rupees.

Gang tricks you in the guise of help
There are many gangs operating in many parts of the country who commit fraud in the guise of helping people who enter the PIN to withdraw money, but after withdrawing the card gets stuck in the machine and the balance is displayed on the ATM screen. Amount, phone number and other information starts coming. As soon as you feel that something is wrong with the machine, two or three people will walk in and one of them will start talking to you while the other will replace your card with another card. After that they will be frozen and then after some time the message of withdrawal of money will come on your registered mobile number.

What do you do when you get caught in a gang trap?
By the time the panicked customer approaches the bank to get the card closed, he will find that a few more thousand rupees have been debited from the account. Closing the card is also a tedious process in itself. Because banks do not have a dedicated line or team to deal with such issues. By the time the exercise of blocking the card continues, several thousand more rupees would have been withdrawn from the account. Desperate card holders are reminded that ‘RBI says…’. It is a frequently seen advertisement on electronic, digital or print medium.

After RBI advice you will approach your branch and file a case with cyber crime branch thinking that they will help you to get your money back. However, the bank gives the same clichéd reply that your PIN must have been tampered with and hence the money cannot be refunded to you. Similarly cyber crime branch will not have time for your case as they have a long list of such cases.

what do the figures say

He called the helpline to get the card blocked, but the customer care executive of the bank took time to get the stolen debit card closed. He showed the details of calling the helpline, but neither the concerned bank nor the RBI accepted it. On the same day, a similar incident happened with a housewife in East Delhi.
